From the early 1960s the United States government kept PGM-19 Jupiter intermediate-range missiles in Turkey, within range of the Soviet Union. The deployment was formally a NATO decision.
According to the Soviet government, these missiles were the real cause of the Cuban Missile Crisis. They were removed in April 1963 (Withdrawal of the Jupiter missiles from Turkey).
