Mark Zuckerberg went from Phillips Exeter Academy to Harvard University, where in February 2004 he launched Thefacebook from his dormitory. He left Harvard and has led Facebook since its incorporation in July 2004.

His first outside investor was Peter Thiel; in 2005 Accel and Jim Breyer followed, and in 2007 Microsoft bought a stake. In his 2017 Harvard commencement speech he said: “If I had to support my family growing up instead of having time to code, if I didn’t know I’d be fine if Facebook didn’t work out, I wouldn’t be standing here today.”
