Lawrence Preston Gise was a career US government employee. He headed the Atomic Energy Commission’s operations for a seven-state region from Albuquerque, then retired early to his family’s ranch in Cotulla, Texas.

He was the father of Jackie Bezos and the maternal grandfather of Jeff Bezos. Accounts of the Bezos family also place him at the newly created ARPA in 1958; that link is still a draft until it is checked against a primary record.
